The concept was edgy, inspired by Cy Twombly's “Suma”powerful red drawing which seems like it could have been drawn by a child.
When I took photos, I was inspired by Shouji Ueda, a Japanese photographer. When he took photos he played with “MA” a japanese word meaning ROOM, SPACE and PAUSE.
Japanese aesthetic sense is very simple and very important for us in daily life. For instance, Mitsuki Tosa, a painter from the Edo period wrote a book that said “Art is how to play(make use of) blank space like poetry. There is a blank space which is not drawn. We want to communicate our thoughts without saying directly and try to feel poetry from it. “
When I engage in photography, I play with this rule, also by using kimono and playing with colours, inspired by Kabuki, classical Japanese theatre.
