Harmony Korine short film taken by digital harinezumi

colour inspiration

When I watched one of his film "Spring breakers" in Japan and knew some of the scenes were taken by digital harinezumi. I immidetly bought it in Japan and put in my pocket everyday.  I really like the weird light reflection, colour, nostalgic atmosphere. Especially sunlight make it more beautiful. also all the picture, movie looks like painting.

CAMERA QUICKSNAP (CLASS)

White space : sunlight (live)

White space : empty

White space : void, alone

White space : Plant, fruit, leaf (live and death)

White space: transparency, cold

When I started thinking about what is "White space" for me? I started looking at "live and death". It is because our traditional mourning dress for women is white colour. and then when I started thinking about the borderline between live and death, I reminds me back this scene from the film Notting Hill.

I'm a fruitarian.

What is a fruitarian exactly?

Well, we believe that fruits and vegetables have feelings, so we think cooking is cruel.

We only eat things that have actually fallen from the tree or bush. That are, in fact, dead already.

Oh, right. Right. So, these carrots... Have been murdered, yes.

Murdered? Gosh, poor old carrots. That's beastly

Definition of Fruitarianism

Some fruitarians will eat only what falls (or would fall) naturally from a plant: that is, foods that can be harvested without killing or harming the plant. These foods consist primarily of culinary fruits, nuts, and seeds. According to author Adam Gollner, some fruitarians eat only fallen fruit. Some do not eat grains, believing it is unnatural to do so, and some fruitarians feel that it is improper for humans to eat seeds as they contain future plants, or nuts and seeds,or any foods besides juicy fruits. Others believe they should eat only plants that spread seeds when the plant is eaten. Others eat seeds and some cooked foods. Some fruitarians use the botanical definitions of fruits and consume pulses, such as beans, peas, or other legumes.

I am interesting in the interpretation of life and death, where I highlighted in blue. Fruitarians think that eating a plant which would fall is allowed because they will die or already death. Even the plan or leaf or vegetable which fall are actually alive. This is I can say for Vegan as well. These definition seems contradictor. Because the interpretation of the borderline between life and death is vague.

How do plants breathe?

Plants, unlike other living things, can produce their own oxygen in a process called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the opposite of respiration. In photosynthesis, plants' carbon dioxide is absorbed by the plant and from that, oxygen is produced.

Plants respire all the time, day or night. However, they only photosynthesize during the day, when the sun is out. Every part of a plant breathes. It "inhales" oxygen through pores along the entire length of the plant, from the roots to the flowers. The roots get oxygen from air pockets in the surrounding soil. The plant "exhales" carbon dioxide the same way.

Certain plants produce more oxygen than others. Plants that produced high amounts of oxygen like the elodea canadenis are often used in ponds and aquariums because they do such a good job of oxygenating water.

I want to express that Plant breath under the sunlight instead he breath by himself. I want to take shooting on the outside under the sunlight. and model who is wearing plants kimono lay down on the grass.

The book "Yohji Yamamoto"

"Light is like the poetry that emerges in between words. Painting and photography beautifully capture visible matters, but they obviously cannot capture formless entitles. Besides, its fluid quality makes light musical: that's why light is so enchanting, and its bewitching beauty cannot be found in a mere object."

"In the world of the performing arts, light can roam around a space, not an empty shell but alive. Light interacts with the performance and enriches the creation on stage, be it theatre, dance or a fashion show that can take place in all kinds of venues. Good lighting makes delicate and lush emotion bloom on stage, In the performing arts there exists something that cannot be found in painting: living, breathing light."

Mafalda Silva

is a Portuguese photographer based in London who takes dreamy photographs of predominantly female models dressed in fashionable clothes or partly nude.

She lives the same story that most of us do; she’s a dreamer, a creator, and a passionate soul. Her sweetheart and profound love is photography; a medium in which she can create a tangible personal diary of intimate and tender moments, like whispers of memories filling the pages of her mind’s diary.

I like how she doesn't show off the clothes. also I like how she play the sunlight. I think I can reference how she uses sunlight in my work.

Especially this picture is beautiful. I liked the choice of location and posing of model. The model laid down on the grass and beautiful sunlight. Her pose make her part of nature. I will use this pose for photoshoot.

White Japanese mourning dress

I remembers when I attended the funeral for the first time in my life a few years ago and I wore white Japanese mourning dress. Generally we wear Black dress but traditional one is white.

Mourning's collar should be left on right side and men and women wear same dress. Kimono is different.

I want to use white Japanese touring dress because If the model wears this, It communicate to the viewer He doesn't breath. He is death."

Riko Uchida Manifesto

1. No image editing may occur in relation to the production of the image

2. Realism and truth is the main focus of the work

From this initial research, Realism and Truth show issue. That's way I put this manifesto.

 3. The language must be translated

From the brief, the most important thing on this project is "Does it give the viewer space to think and be creative? does the work communicate? " Language is my concept, what I want to tell from to the viewers. I have to communicate through my work.

4. Second skin to conceal race, gender, class

This is inspired by Nick Cave.

5. Trust myself

It is really simple and important but I always lost myself during the process of the work. I will keep saying to myself all the time, "Belive yourself, Trust yourself."  I went to the Marina Abramovic talk event and one of her advice for young artists was "Trust yourself".

EXPERIMENT

LOCATION: SOAS

CAMERA: DIGITAL HARINEZUMI

First plan was shooting outside under the sun, lay down on the grass. however It was raining and cloudy. So I decided to take using white wall behind the window. (tried to get sunlight as much as possible)

This camera's capture sunlight in a beautiful way but I took pictures inside of the building so the pictures were too dark and It was unsuccessful.

I think I am going to use one of these pictures for final outcome. Because Camera capture sunlight in a beautiful way. I am afraid that these pictures show cloth more than concept and model. because of the white wall.
